My focus has always been on <em>delivering impact to customers at scale<\/em>. I started at Amazon, where I worked on query understanding and ranking for Amazon Search. Outside of that, I love reading investment reports, especially around companies adopting AI. I also enjoy swimming, solving Rubik\u2019s Cubes, and playing Chess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What first sparked your interest in AI?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tanvi:<\/strong> Back in undergrad, I came across the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pearson.com\/en-us\/subject-catalog\/p\/artificial-intelligence-a-modern-approach\/P200000003500\/9780137505135?srsltid=AfmBOoqu83M1xOwj8wcvY8N4H0cXrMm31dSWbwRfJv5gkZYNljgwqT7h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach<\/a> by Peter Norvig and Stuart Russell. Concepts like the A* algorithm and NLP tree parsing fascinated me. Around the same time, Google was emerging as a search engine, and I loved comparing it to Ask Jeeves and Yahoo to see how each handled semantics and ranking. I was hooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MCP (Model Context Protocol) is becoming a new standard. What\u2019s your perspective?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tanvi:<\/strong> I see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gosearch.ai\/blog\/model-context-protocol-smarter-ai-interactions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MCP<\/a> as a major step forward in standardizing how LLMs interact with tools. At Snap, we had to build custom integrations to connect LLMs with Snap Places, Lenses, and video features. MCP essentially makes that work reusable across contexts; it creates a consistent way to handle permissions, manage prompts, and orchestrate workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What excites me is that MCP doesn\u2019t just simplify engineering; it makes LLM-powered systems more contextual and personalized. AI overall has leveled the playing field. Before, the big differentiator was computing power. If you had thousands of GPUs, you had the advantage. Today, with LLMs accessible via APIs and fine-tuning at lower cost, startups can compete with fewer resources. MCP accelerates this shift by giving everyone a standardized, open way to connect tools and workflows.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do you define AI strategy at the companies you\u2019ve worked at?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tanvi:<\/strong> I always start with the customer problem. Too many companies begin with the technology \u2014 \u201cwe have an LLM, how can we use it?\u201d Instead, you need to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s the metric we want to move? (Cost reduction, revenue, growth, customer satisfaction)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s the right AI tool for that metric? (LLM, regression, boosted trees, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do we scale the solution across customers?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s my three-step philosophy: start with the problem, then choose the technology, then execute and scale it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What about the data architecture to support AI at scale?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanvi: For application companies, it\u2019s about building ML platform teams who handle feature stores, training, inference, and MLOps. Most large orgs now also build an LLM platform layer so that every team doesn\u2019t call OpenAI or Anthropic directly \u2014 everything goes through a governance layer. For foundational companies, the challenge is computing and GPUs. You need infrastructure that can handle training and inference at a global scale, often with partners, hyperscalers, and other companies like Coreweave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>There\u2019s been talk about GPU supply and data center capacity not keeping up with demand. Do you see that as a critical issue?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanvi: Yes, especially as models get larger and more reasoning-intensive. Foundational LLMs with trillions of parameters require massive GPU capacity. Smaller specialized LMs (SLMs) can get by with fewer GPUs, but for advanced reasoning, compute is still the bottleneck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What AI advancements excite you most in the next few years?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tanvi:<\/strong> Three stand out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Specialized Language Models (SLMs):<\/strong> Smaller, fine-tuned models for domain-specific needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Agentic AI:<\/strong> Autonomous agents that not only reason but also complete tasks with or without human-in-the-loop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Personal AI Assistants:<\/strong> Truly context-aware assistants that know your documents, email, and work style, and can act on your behalf.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If I had to make one bet, it\u2019s on autonomous agents. Real-world data is golden, but it\u2019s hard to use at scale without privacy risks. We\u2019re seeing more approaches like using large open-source LLMs (Llama, Qwen) to generate training data for smaller models. Distillation techniques, as highlighted in the DeepSeek announcement, are also key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How are large enterprises approaching AI adoption?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tanvi:<\/strong> It\u2019s a mix. On one side, you see developers experimenting bottom-up, calling OpenAI directly and proving out use cases. Some of those experiments make it into production. On the other side, you see caution \u2014 employees worry AI might replace jobs. Successful adoption requires cultural work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creating psychological safety so employees see AI as an augmentation, not a replacement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clear governance around which tools are licensed and approved<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education to demystify AI and show its real benefits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are your thoughts on workplace productivity tools powered by AI?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tanvi:<\/strong> Tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gosearch.ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GoSearch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golinks.io\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GoLinks<\/a> are redefining productivity. I always remind younger engineers to review AI-generated code \u2014 it\u2019s an augmentation, not a replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Let\u2019s do a few rapid-fire questions. What\u2019s the biggest myth you hear about AI?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tanvi:<\/strong> That AI has feelings or emotions. It doesn\u2019t. It\u2019s very good at memorization and increasingly at reasoning, but emotions and consciousness are far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If you weren\u2019t working in AI, what would you be doing?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tanvi<\/strong>: Investing. I love analyzing earnings reports and studying how companies transform themselves with AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where do you find your AI inspiration?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tanvi<\/strong>: Mostly from research papers, blogs, and AI influencers.
